Background: The 131st Henley Royal Regatta opened today (July 1) having attracted some of the world's best oarsmen. But this top boating event is just as famous for its river bank social scene. Fashionable women are as much an attraction as the actual races.
Reportedly it was quieter Regatta Opening Day than in past years, but nevertheless the distinct English atmosphere was much in evidence. So too was the England weather--varying between bright bursts of sunshine and dull, coll interludes.
Most women spectators, as always, had come to be seen just as much as to watch a day's water sport. Fashions varied between chic and bizarre.
But the standard of cars manship was as high as ever with, in particular, two first-class victories by the Dutch Eight, Groninger Studenten Roeivereeniging Aegir over Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and University of Pennsylvania's Four over vesta Rowing Club.
Henley Royal Regatta had begun with its usual flourish.
