  • Description

Aly Sabry -- the late Egyptian President Nasser's closest aide -- was sentenced in Cairo today (9 December) -- to hard labour for life. The 51-year-old Vice-President was found guilty of plotting to overthrow Egypt's current President Anwar Sadat. A three-man revolutionary tribunal said the President had commuted death sentences on Sabry and others involved in the alleged conspiracy. They include former Interior Minister Sharawy Gomaa and ex-Information Minister Mohamed Fayek. Sabry was fired by President Sadat in May after he challenged the President's decision to form a union with Libya and Syria. He was accused of sparking off anti-Sadat debates in the Arab Socialist Union Central Committee.

The treason trail was moved into secret session after a prosecution plea that the Israeli Government would be "happy" to read about the activities of the accused.

This film is composed of Visnews library material showing scenes of the trial while reporters were still permitted to attend.
