  • Description

Since 1960, the populace of Ling County in Honan Province have been excavating tunnels and channels on the rocky slopes of the Thai Hang Mountains and have built a big irrigation project which they call the Red Flag Channel.

After five years of arduous work, they have succeeded in diverting the Chang River and raising the diverted flow up the Thai Hang Mountains. The project entails the excavation of many mountain tennels; the water has to be channelled over steep ravines; and at some fifty places, the aqueduct skirts the face of sheer precipices more than 200 metres high.

The water began coming through on April 5th of this year. The successful raising of the Chang River's water up the mountains marked the realisation of a long cherished dream of the people of Ling County: to bring irrigation to their drought stricken land.

When all the work on the Red Flag Channel is completed, it will be linked up with other water conduits in the area to form a comprehensive irrigation system.
