  • Description

THE GAULLIST PARTY SURGED TO A CONVINCING LEAD TODAY (MONDAY) IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS AND SEEMED TO BE HEADING FOR A RECORD MAJORITY IN THE SECOND ROUND NEXT SUNDAY (JUNE 30).

WITH ONLY A FEW RESULTS STILL TO COME IN FROM YESTERDAY'S VOTING IN THE 487 CONSTITUENCIES IN METROPOLITAN FRANCE AND THE OVERSEAS TERRITORIES, THE GAULLISTS AND AFFILIATED INDEPENDENT REPUBLICANS HAD WON 148 SEATS OUTRIGHT. THE COMBINED FORCES OF THE OPPOSITION COULD ONLY MUSTER 12 SEATS BETWEEN THEM IN THE FIRST ROUND.

THE ELECTION WAS A PERSONAL TRIUMPH FOR PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S CABINET, PURGED AND RECONSTRUCTED WHEN THE RECENT WAVE OF VIOLENT ANTI-GAULLIST DEMONSTRATIONS AND STUDENT AND INDUSTRIAL UNREST THREATENED TO PLUNGE THE COUNTRY INTO ANARCHY. PRIME MINISTER GEORGES POMPIDOU, HIS REPUTATION ENHANCED BY HIS FIRM HANDLING OF THE CRISIS, WAS ELECTED ON THE FIRST ROUND ALONG WITH 20 OF HIS COLLEAGUES.

THE GAULLISTS NOW ONLY NEED TO WIN AT MOST 96 SEATS IN THE SECOND ROUND TO ENSURE A WORKING MAJORITY IN THE ASSEMBLY, BUT POLITICAL OBSERVERS IN PARIS BELIEVED THEY WERE SET TO WIN SOME 150 OF THE REMAINING 340 SEATS.
