Background: Bulldozer teams probing a flooded rubbish pit in the West German town of Bochum for drums of highly poisonous cyanide salts ware ordered on Tuesday (10 August) to stop work because of d??? from poison gas.
Workmen had earlier found 200 drums of the chemical -- a by-product of steel-making -- after they started turning over the m??? of refuse following local tip-offs alleging that 15,000 to 20,000 drums had been sunk in the pit.
The Bochum Public Prosecutor has ordered a legal investigation into the alleged disposal of the waste and police have cordoned off the area following the find -- touching off West Germany's second big chemical waste scare within a month. Recovery teams in the Bochum pit have been drinking large quantities of milk, said to offer protection against gas fumes. City officials have been called on to test the city's supply to see whether it has been contaminated by cyanide that might have seeped underground from the refuse pit.
