  • Description

United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Alfred Atherton, met King Hussein of Jordan in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Saturday (28 January), and briefed him on American efforts to close the gap between Egypt and Israel over a Middle East peace settlement. Mr. Atherton also delivered a message to King Hussein from United States President Jimmy Carter.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Atherton's meeting with King Hussein was in the Army Headquarters in Amman, and came as the United States was preparing to intensify its efforts to break the deadlock paralysing Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's Middle East peace initiative.

Mr. Atherton flew to Amman from Jerusalem, and he was able to brief King Hussein on the latest attempts being made to word a declaration of principles for a peace settlement.

The main reason for the Assistant Secretary of State being in the Jordanian capital was said to be the need to brief United States envoys in the area. His meeting with King Hussein was described as a courtesy call, and the King later spoke to newsmen about it.

London's `O server' newspaper quotes United States sources as saying that King Hussein is unlikely to declare his position until after agreement on a declaration of principles.
