  • Description

Thirty-five severely sick and wounded Pakistani prisoners of war were on Monday (10 April) put aboard an aircraft chartered by the Indian Red Cross at Palam Airport, Delhi.

Pakistani in return is repatriating an equal number of Indian prisoners of war, including four civilians.

This is the second exchange of prisoners, A previous exchange took place in February, when twenty-seven Pakistanis were flown home in return for seventeen Indians.

India still holds more than 90-thousand prisoners of war, and is reluctant to hand back so many able-bodied men without a real peace settlement with Pakistan. India claims also that it can only hand back the prisoners when Bangladesh has decided which of them it wants to try for war crimes. About 15-thousand prisoners are being held in India on charges of war crimes.
