  • Description

FIVE PEOPLE WERE KILLED INSTANTLY AND 30 OTHERS INJURED EARLY TODAY (MONDAY), WHEN A GERMAN AND A DUTCH TRAIN WERE IN HEAD-ON COLLISION ON A SINGLE TRACK LINE A FEW MILES FROM ARNHEM. THE CRASH COINCIDED WITH CELEBRATIONS PLANNED TO MARK THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF THE DUTCH RAILWAYS. THE FESTIVITIES WERE IMMEDIATELY CANCELLED.

THE COLLISION FORCED ONE TRAIN ON TO THE ROOF OF THE OTHER. A NEARBY SIGNAL BOX WAS DEMOLISHED BY THE IMPACT. A FIRE BROKE OUT BUT WAS SOON BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL BY THE ARNHEM FIRE BRIGADE. THE PRESIDENT OF THE DUTCH RAILWAYS WAS ONE OF SEVERAL SENIOR OFFICIALS TO VISIT THE SCENE.

THERE WERE ABOUT 50 PASSENGERS IN THE GERMAN TRAIN OF FIVE CARRIAGES, AND JUST OVER 50 IN THE FIVE CARRIAGE DUTCH EXPRESS WHEN THE IMPACT OCCURRED NEAR A BRIDGE ACROSS THE RIVER DIESEL. THE GERMAN TRAIN CAME FROM OBERHAUSEN IN THE RUHR. THE DUTCH TRAIN - A DIESEL - CAME FROM ARNHEM. DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT A MILLION GUILDERS (ABOUT GBP100,000 STERLING). THE SINGLE LINE TRACK, BUILT TO CROSS A TEMPORARY BRIDGE SOON AFTER THE WAR, SHOULD BE CLEARED BY TOMORROW (TUESDAY)
