  • Description

British Trade Commissioner James Cross was released on Thursday (Dec. 3) after 59 days as a hostage of kidnappers belonging to the Quebec separatist movement.

Cross was in apparent good health and spirits as he talked to police and government officials after his release.

Cross's place of custody in Montreal North was sealed off by Montreal police and federal troops early Thursday. Later, after the kidnappers indicated that they wished to negotiate for his release, Cross and his abductors travelled with a police motorcade to the site of Expo 67 where negotiations took place.

Three kidnappers and four of their relatives later were flown to Cuba in a Canadian military plane as part of the release arrangement.

Prime Minister Elliott Trudeau expressed his relief and gratitude at the safe release of the British diplomat.
