The chairman of a five-man Arab mediation committee on the Yemeni fighting, Dr. Selim al-Yafi, said in the Lebanon on Wednesday (October 4) that his commission hoped for "positive results". He was speaking at Beirut Airport where the group had landed on route to Aden -- capital of the People's Democratic Republic of the Yemen (South Yemen), which had been in dispute for over a week with its northern neighbour, the Yemen Arab Republic. Border fighting by land and air flared up in late September, and over 100 people had been reported killed in several incidents by the end of the month.
Relations between the two countries, which blamed each other for the fighting, deteriorated late last year when North Yemen accused South Yemen of killing 65 Yemen Arab Republic tribal Sheikhs.
The mediation committee, due to resume its flight to Aden later on Wednesday, was composed of the Algerian, Kuwaiti, Syrian, Egyptian and Libyan permanent delegates to the Arab League in Cairo, Egypt.
