  • Description

Efforts to hold an Arab summit meeting to discuss the crisis in Lebanon, made another advance on Saturday (4 September), when foreign ministers representing Arab League members decided that such a summit should be held in October.

SYNOPSIS: Saudi Arabia was represented by Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, and the Libyan Government of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, was represented by the head of the Libyan Relation Office, Mr. Abdul Kader Khouka.

Mr. Ismail Fahmy, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, was a key figure at the meeting. The Egyptians have been highly critical of heavy Syrian military involvement in the 17 month-old Lebanese civil war.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, told mewsmen after the first session that the ending of the Lebanese crisis and the strengthening of Arab solidarity, were inter-dependent, and that differences would have to be settled first.

Mr. Riad said that it would be logical for the heads-of-states to meet to consider the Lebanese problem, while they still had differences among themselves. Some Arab countries support Syria's involvement in Lebanon, others oppose it, while the rest are uncommitted.
