  • Description

A 32-YEAR-OLD AFRICAN EYE SURGEON, DR. RICHARD AMIANI, WHO HAS SPENT THE GREATER PART OF THE PAST SIX YEARS TRAVELLING THROUGH KENYA'S BUSH TREATING AND OPERATING ON AFRICANS IN DANGER OF GOING BLIND, OR WHO HAVE ALREADY GONE BLIND, MAY SOON FIND AID FOR HIS LONE QUEST. NEXT YEAR, THE ROYAL COMMONWEALTH SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND AND THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR THE OVERSEAS BLIND ARE TO DIVIDE MORE OF THEIR RESOURCES TO THE KENYA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND TO HELP IN AN EVER-GROWING PROBLEM.

THE AID WHICH WILL REACH DR. AMIANI'S SMALL TEAM WILL BE MORE THAN WELCOME, FOR BLINDNESS IS A TREMENDOUS PROBLEM AND THREAT AMONG KENYA'S BUSH DWELLERS. DURING THE PAST 11 MONTHS DR. AMIANI HAS TRAVELLED A TOTAL OF ALMOST 10 THOUSAND MILES (16,093 KM), HAS TREATED MORE THAN 46,700 PATIENTS, AND HAS PERFORMED MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND EYE OPERATIONS - MOST OF THEM SUCCESSFULLY.

DR. AMIANI'S WORK IS SUPPORTED BY THE KENYA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND ENTIRELY OUT OF VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS. THE MOST VALUABLE ASSET HE HAS IS HIS MOBILE EYE UNIT, A LAND ROVER, WHICH THE SOCIETY ACQUIRED RECENTLY, REPLACING THE UNRELIABLE TRANSPORT ON WHICH THE DOCTOR HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD TO DEPEND.

FOR 11 MONTHS OF THE YEAR, FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS, DR. AMIANI HAS LIVED AND WORKED IN THE BUSH. ALTHOUGH HE IS MARRIED, WITH A SMALL CHILD, HE SAYS THAT HE ENJOYS HIS WORK.

DR. AMIANI'S WORK IS HINDERED BY THE LACK OF TRAINED STAFF, FOR MANY KENYAN LOCAL AUTHORITIES ARE RELUCTANT TO GIVE UP QUALIFIED STAFF WHO ARE NOW TREATING OTHER DISEASES. BUT HELP DOES COME FROM THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES, THOUGH, AND DR. AMIANI'S TEAM IS ABLE TO USE HEALTH CENTRES IN VILLAGES WHERE, WHEN THE MOBILE UNIT FIRST STARTED, OPERATIONS HAD TO BE CARRIED OUT UNDER CANVAS AWNINGS.

EYE DISEASES ARE ALL TOO COMMON IN THE KENYAN BUSH, AND IT IS NOT AN UNUSUAL SIGHT TO SEE A SMALL CHILD LEADING ITS GRANDPARENTS TO THE UNIT FOR TREATMENT. BUT IT IS THE VERY YOUNG THAT DR. AMIANI TRIES TO SEEK OUT. BY HIS WORK, AND WITH GOVERNMENT AND FOREIGN AID AND WITH LOCAL VOLUNTARY EFFORTS TO RAISE FUNDS, IT IS HOPED TO REDUCE DRASTICALLY THE NUMBERS OF KENYA'S BLIND.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN 90 THOUSAND BLIND IN KENYA TODAY - AND ALMOST 10 THOUSAND OF THEM ARE SCHOOLAGE CHILDREN. WITH THE INCREASED AID NEXT YEAR IT IS HOPED TO REACH MANY MORE OF THOSE IN NEED, AND IN THE BUSH DR. AMIANI'S WORK WILL BE GREATLY HELPED WITH THE SUPPLY BY THE BRITISH ORGANISATION OF A SECOND MOBILE UNIT.
