  • Description

Five bomb blasts ripped apart cars and damaged buildings in Larnaca, southern Cyprus on Wednesday (January 2) in the latest wave of political violence between supporters of guerrilla leader General Grivas and President Makarios.

Bombs were placed in two houses and three cars belonging to supporters of General Grivas. The houses were badly damaged and the cars destroyed. No one was hurt. A number of other bombs in Larnaca failed to explode.

There had also been some explosions on the previous day. Five Greek Cypriots were arrested, but this failed to stop Wednesday's explosions.

Although there has been a lull in recent months, violent clashes between Grivas and Makarios supporters have been going on for some years. At one time the two men were allies in the struggle against British colonial rule, but they have since fallen out over Grivas' desire for Enosis or political union with Greece. President Makarios has tried to suppress the Enosis movement.
