But students, whose demonstrations caused the Field Marshal to resign as head of the government three years ago, have again been holding rallies in Bangkok. The latest demonstrations took place on Saturday (25 September) when several thousand students massed at Chulalongkorn University in the capital and demanded his expulsion. They have given government authorities the one alternative of taking Field Marshal Thanom before a court to face trial for he death of 72 people in violence surrounding his resignation in 1973. The students are further angered by the death of two men found hanged on Friday night in the town of Nakhon Pathom.

Student leaders, who spoke at the rally on the university grounds, connected the death of the two men with followers of the former ruler. The students said both men were members of an activist organisation. They were seen pasting up posters condemning Field Marshal Thanom just before their bodies were found. when the Field Marshal returned to Thailand from his exile, he said he had come to visit his ailing father who is 91.
