  • Description

Fire raged Oct 7 on Britain's biggest pier at Southend on the South East Coast, gutted a pavilion - one of the main attractions on the pier - and gave the resort's visitors a brilliant spectacle for an hour and half before firemen finally controlled the inferno.

The visitors' major aim that night was originally to gape and gasp at the pier's scintillating illuminations. The fire was better: flames crackled high into the dark evening sky, smoke billowed from the sea-wind-swept pavilion, sparks and embers rose and fell in a galaxy.

The pavilion is at the end nearest the shore. So fierce was the outbreak that visitors and anglers on the sea-end of the pier had to be rescued in boats.
