  • Description

Great excitement and items of animal gossip is being relayed through London's Zoological Gardens. 'Mary' - the female giraffe born to 'Grumpy' and her mate 'Goofy' on Nov. 1st - was on show Nov 16 for the first time. At birth the baby giraffe stood 6ft. 2inches. She is growing fast, and how measures 6ft. 8 inches.

She has been named 'Mary' by Head Keeper in charge of giraffes, George Robinson, a great admirer of Mary Bignell, the athlete chosen as sportswoman of the year for 1959.

Mary's parents are Reticulated Giraffes, who came to London Zoo in 1949 from Kenya. They came with five other young giraffes, and the seven new arrivals were named after the Seven Dwarfs in the Walt Disney film Snow White. By giraffe standards 'Grumpy' and 'Goofy' are of normal age to become parents, giraffes entering the breeding age when they are 5 years old. Their average life span is 25 years.

At Whipsnade Zoo (U.K.) this year, two baby giraffes have been born - one of them to 'Happy', another of the Seven Dwarfs. The other four of the Dwarfs went to the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland some years ago.
