  • Description

The Czechoslovak Communist party's 144-man Central Committee, which has announced the expulsion of former leader Alexander Dubcek from its ranks, began its meeting on Thursday (27 June) in Prague.

The meeting was opened by Dr. Gustav Husak, the current party leader, who stressed that Czechoslovakia would not return to the era of political show trials. The expulsion of Alexander Dubcek, the man who tried to change the face of communism in the country was announced at the end of the two-day meeting on Friday (26 June).

Earlier in the week Mr. Dubcek lost his post as Ambassador to Turkey and he now has no status in any branch of the Government and party apparatus he controlled during the liberalisation era which ended abruptly on August 20, 1968, the day Warsaw Pact tanks rolled into Prague.
