  • Description

TWENTY-TWO AFRICANS WENT ON TRIAL IN PRETORIA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ON CHARGES BROUGHT UNDER SOUTH AFRICA'S SUPPRESSION OF COMMUNISM ACT.

AMONG THE DEFENDANTS IS MRS. WINNIE MANDELA, WIFE OF THE FORMER LEADER OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS (ANC), NELSON MANDELA, WHO IS NOW SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE FOR PLOTTING REVOLUTION AND PLANNING A MILITARY INVASION OF SOUTH AFRICA.

MRS. MANDELA AND THE OTHER DEFENDANTS, WHO INCLUDE FOUR OTHER WOMEN, WERE TAKEN TO PRETORIA SUPREME COURT IN A GUARDED PRISON LORRY. THEY ARE ACCUSED OF DISCUSSING FUND-RAISING FOR THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WITH BRITISH ECONOMIST PHILIP GOLDING, WHO HAS BEEN UNDER DETENTION SINCE MAY THIS YEAR. HE IS GIVING STATE EVIDENCE AGAINST THE ACCUSED.

AS THE CASE OPENED, THE STATE PROSECUTION CLAIMED IT WOULD PRODUCE EVIDENCE TO SHOW THE DEFENDANTS HAD REVIVED THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS IN 1967 -- SEVEN YEARS IT HAD BEEN DECLARED ILLEGAL.

PLEAS OF NOT GUILTY WERE ENTERED ON BEHALF OF ALL THE DEFENDANTS.
