  • Description

More than 100 people were reported injured in the Argentine capital Suenos Aires on Wednesday (1 May) when fights broke out between left and right wing Peronists after President Juan Paron addressed a large May Day rally from the balcony of the Casa Rosade, the pink painted Government House facing the Plaza de Mayo.

It was Argentina's first May Day celebration for seventeen years.

During his previous rule from 1946 to 1955 May Day was General Peron's date for reporting to the nation.

This revival of May Day as an Argentine worker's fiesta was intended as a day of national unity with folk singers and dancers, the crowning of a labour queen and free soft drinks and fruit in the plaza.

The trouble came as columns of the radical Peronist youth movement downed their banners and left the Plaza as the 78-year-old leader launched into an attack on Marxist infiltrators of his movement. As they moved off supporters of the traditional Peronist trade union movement attacked them from the rear. And shortly before the President began his speech to a crowd estimated at 200,000, about 200 supporters of rival factions clashed with fi???, stones and sticks in the centre of the square. At least 8,000 policemen were on duty in the biggest security operation since President peron's return to Argentina last year.

The supporters of President Peron are deeply divided and in-fighting within the movement has brought dozens of assassinations in the past nine months. The friction between left and right wing groups within Peronism has been widely interpreted as the beginning of the struggle to control the movement and its political orientation after the retirement or death of General Peron.
