In the worst fire Paris has known since World War Two, a woman employee was burned to death and hundreds of customers ran for their lives when an American style drugstore was completed consumed by flames during Wednesday night and early Thursday morning (27/28 Sept).

Police are discounting claims that the Palestine guerrilla organisation Black September was responsible for setting fire to the seven storey complex of buildings -- situated on the Champs-Elysees neat the Arc do Triomphe -- which also housed a large advertising agency headed by prominent Jewish businessman Marcel Bleustein Blanchet.

'Le Drugstore' had been a popular tourist attraction since it first opened 12 years ago. Eye Witnesses said the building went up suddenly 'like a matchbox'. The flames could be seen from all over Paris.

The charred remains of the dead woman were found in what had been the store's cloakroom. One theory is that she went back inside the building to retrieve her coat after customers had been hurriedly evacuated at the start of the fire.
