  • Description

Last Friday (26 June) the Malagasy Republic celebrated the tenth anniversary of its independence with a series of special functions including a large parade attended by many distinguished guests.

The Malagasy Republic, formerly the French Colony of Madagascar, became fully independent on 26th June 1960 and last Friday celebrated the tenth anniversary of this event in the capital Tananarive where a programme of special events and parades was held.

President Philibert Tsiranana- locally acknowledged as the "Father of Independence" - welcomed many distinguished guests to the celebrations. The President was looking well following months of serious illness. Among the guests were American Under - Secretary of State David Newson; Yang Hadi Khun, Vice-President of the Socialist Internationale: France's African and Malagasy Affairs representative Jacques Foccart; and Secretary of State in Charge of Co-operation, Yvon Bourges.

The two-hour military and civilian parade along the Avenue of Independence included troops of the armed forces as well as schoolchildren and gymnasts. Celebrations began the night before (Thursday) with a fireworks and torchlight display, and the official guests were also invited to attend a round of functions after the parade. These included a Garden Party and numerous sporting and cultural events in the city.
