  • Description

Two days ago the Lebanese Government received 18 tanks (M 41) from the United States under an agreement whereby America agrees to provide military aid to Lebanon. The arrival of these vehicles has nothing to do directly with the present crisis in the country.

These 20-ton tanks are fitted with machine guns as well as 76 mm cannon.

Several plane loads of spare parts for the tanks, supplied under the Eisenhower Doctrine for the Middle East, were also flown into Beirut together with five technicians to assist Lebanese technicians in the early stages of the take-over.

Our cameraman filmed a demonstration of two of these tanks at the Beirut Military Barracks. They are regarded as the most efficient light tanks in existence.

At the same time it was reported that the situation in Beirut was relatively calm. There was occasional shooting and bombing, largely to scare shopkeepers from opening for business.
