Two surprise victories made for a day of exciting tennis at London's Albert Hall on Saturday (6 November), when some of the world's top professional players competed for the Dewar Cup titles.

SYNOPSIS: Mexican Raul Ramirez serving to the Spaniard Manuel Orantes who was in unbeatable form -- and only a short distance into the first set it became obvious that the Mexican was also playing well. He was soon playing the sort of powerful, precision tennis that would outclass most opponents. And this despite a heavily bandaged injured left foot.

Ramirez one set up -- and his long-sought win over Orantes is in sight -- ending the Spaniards remarkable record run of 22 victories. The match, worth 20,000 U.S. dollars to Ramirez and 10,000 to Orantes, lasted only 62 minutes. Afterwards Orantes said Ramirez seemed to gain confidence as the match progressed -- "I could feel it all slipping away from me" he commented.

Towards the end of the second set -- and Ramirez had the game well under control, pinning Orantes to the baseline with his shots from the net and eventually taking his victory on the second match point -- 6-3, 6-4.

In the women's singles Britain's Virginia Wade was also on peak form--dazzling both spectators and television viewers alike with a truly outstanding display of virtuosity against Chris Evert of the United States -- the current Wimbledon champion. With a partisan home crowd to cheer her on, Miss. Wade played some of the best tennis of her career.

Having already won the first set 6-2, Virginia Wade's confidence was well established at this point in the match. Towards the end of the second set, she broke service to make it five games to nil, but even then could not afford to ease up against her tough and skilful opponent. Miss. Evert managed to pull out some tricks to take two games, before Miss. Wade smashed home her advantage and clinched the match 6-2, 6-2.
