    Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was given unqualified authority to dispense with parliamentary democracy and change the government into a one-party presidential form last Tuesday (21 January).

    Sheikh Mujib became President on Saturday (25 January) after the Parliament voted with a sweeping majority to replace the country's constitution.

    The new constitution dissolves all existing political parties and gives the President unprecedented powers to form a national party to be named by him later.

    Sheikh Mujib held an emergency meeting with his cabinet lasting three hours on Tuesday. later he met party members, and a statement released after the meeting said they had "deliberated on all the outstanding problems of the country and unanimously authorised Sheikh Mujib to take such steps as are necessary to resolve them."
    Under the new constitution, the President will be chosen by direct election after every five years. There is to be a Vice-President and a Council of Ministers headed by a Prime Minister, all responsible to the President.
