  • Description

West German world sidecar champion Klaus Enders took over half a minute off his own lap record on Thursday (30 May) in practice for the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races.

Enders, last year's winner, lapped in 97.62 m.p.h. (157 k.p.h.) demonstrating that he is in top form for this year's races which start on Saturday (1 June).

The TT is considered the toughest and most dangerous motorcycle roadrace in the world. More than a hundred riders have been killed on the cource since 1907.

The death last year of strong championship contender Gilberto Parlotti persuaded several more top riders not to take part including Italian Giacomo Agontini, twelve times world champion. Yet practice times keep getting faster and many regulars at the annual races are forecasting the first 110 m.p.h. (176 k.p.h.) lap this year.

Apart from enders' spectacular lap, English rider Peter Williams, leader of the John Player Norton team, equalled his Formula 750 record at 107.27 m.p.h. (173 k.p.h.).

The Isle of Man government say they have spent GBP 110,000 (about 264,000 dollars) improving the 37 3/4 mile (60.4 km.) course during parts of the practice week and the actual races.

SYNOPSIS: Times are getting faster and faster in practice for the notoriously dangerous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy races which begin on Saturday. Number one -- English rider Peter Williams -- equalled his Formula seven-fifty record with this run at a hundred and seven point two miles an hour on Thursday.

The races are around the houses so roads are closed to the public during the races and parts of the practice week.

The sidecar races produced the real surprise of Thursday's practices. Even West Germans like Schauzu and Steinhusen could not keep up with fellow countryman and world sidecar champion klaus Enders.
