  • Description

ALBERT SPEER, HITLER'S ARMAMENTS MINISTER - RELEASED FROM IMPRISONMENT FOR WAR CRIMES TWO YEARS AGO - APPEARED TODAY AS A WITNESS IN ANOTHER WAR CRIMES TRIAL IN ESSEN.

THREE MEMBERS OF THE STAFF OF THE CONCENTRATION CAMP MITTELBAU (DORA), NEAR HORDAUSEN IN THE HARZ MOUNTAINS, - E. BUSTER, BISCHOFF AND SANDER - ARE ACCUSED OF HAVING MURDERED 95 PRISONERS IN 1944 AND 1945. SPEER WAS SUMMONED BEFORE THE ESSEN COURT AT THE REQUEST OF THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR TO REVEAL WHAT ORDERS WERE GIVEN TO THE GESTAPO IN MITTELBAU.

PRESS AND PUBLIC HAVE SHOWN CONSIDERABLE INTEREST IN THIS "MAMMOTH TRIAL" WHICH HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE NOVEMBER 1967 AND DURING WHICH OVER 200 WITNESSES HAVE APPEARED SO FAR.

THE CAMP PRODUCED COMPONENTS FOR THE GERMAN V-ROCKETS USED TO BOMBARD SOUTHERN ENGLAND, AND THUS - ACCORDING TO A SPOKESMAN FOR THE PROSECUTION - CAME UNDER SPEER'S MINISTRY.

SPEER, 63, WAS RELEASED FROM THE ALLIED FOUR-POWER SPANDAU PRISON IN WEST BERLIN IN 1966, TOGETHER WITH FORMER HITLER YOUTH LEADER BALDUR VON SCHIRACH, AFTER COMPLETING A 20-YEAR SENTENCE FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY AND WAR CRIMES.
