Background: A senior official of the World Health Organisation has warned the Organisation's East Mediterranean Regional Committee of the dangers of the population explosion in the area.
Dr. Abdel-Hussein, Taba, Regional W.H.O. Director for the area, was speaking at the opening session of the 23rd session of the committee.
He said that if it were not checked, the population of the area by the year 2,000 would be over 560 million people.
The five days of meetings, which began on September 8, are being attended by representatives of Health Ministries in 23 countries as well as by United Nations and affiliated organisations' officials.
The Session will discuss health problems in the area and also the formation of an independent international committee to study the health situation of Arabs in Israeli-occupied Arab territories.
