  • Description

Siam, one of the Buddhist kingdoms of Asia, celebrated "Wesak Day" - May 30 - on a very large scale. People all over the country first attended devotional services at the Temples, and spent the rest of the day in gay festivity.

King Phumiphol and Queen Sirikit joined worshippers at the Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok, and participated in the traditional procession three times around the Temple carrying lighted candles. They were followed by members of the Royal Court and high officials of the Government.

"Wesak Day" celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gauthama, the Indian Prince who founded Buddhism nearly 2,500 years ago on the principles of right thought, right speech, and right action as a path for salvation for misery.
