Background: Air Force helicopters and planes dropped food and medical supplies on Tuesday (23 September) to 100,000 people marooned in villages by floods in the eastern Indian state of Orissa. Another 200,000 survivors were reported camped out on embankments, road and high points amid the floodwaters. Fresh flooding was also reported in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh where more than 1,500 people have drowned during the last two months.

SYNOPSIS: This is Jaunpur, just one of the many towns in Uttar Pradesh which have been devastated by the monsoon floods. More than 25-million people have been affected since flooding in the state began in July. The heavy death toll increased last week when seventy-five people were drowned in heavy rains. In the eastern coastal state of Orissa the official death toll stood at 208 on Tuesday (23 September). Unofficial reports, however, said more than 500 people had died in the floods since Wednesday (17 September). Production in all the major industries has come to a halt, and most towns are short of drinking water.

Uttar Pradesh now faces another spell of serious floods. Life in most of its towns was dislocated after the incessant heavy rain. Thousands of people are still trapped by the flood waters and rescue squads are struggling to locate and rescue them.
