    BELGIAN EX-OLYMPIC CHAMPION GASTON ROELANTS WON THE INTERNATIONAL HANNUT CROSS COUNTRY RACE TODAY (SUNDAY). THE VICTORY MARKED THE SIXTH TIME THAT ROELANTS HAD WON THE RACE. THE BELGIAN RAN IN THE EVENT ONLY 48 HOURS BEFORE HE IS TO LEAVE FOR PUERTO RICO.

    THROUGHOUT THE RACE, ROELANTS WAS CLOSELY TRAILED BY TIM JOHNSTON, FROM ENGLAND, WHO TOOK SECOND PLACE. JOHNSTON WON THE HANNUT CROSS COUNTRY RACE IN 1963.

    THE RUNNERS, WHO BEGAN THE RACE IN THE AFTERNOON, HAD A DISTANCE OF 9,000 METRES TO COVER. THEY RAN ONCE AROUND THE SMALLER TRACK, SIX TIMES AROUND THE ENTIRE COURSE AND ONCE AROUND A SMALLER COURSE.

    THE RACE WAS MADE MORE DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF VERY COLD WEATHER.

    RUNNERS FROM BELGIUM, ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, HOLLAND, AND WEST GERMANY PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT.
