Background: The largest exhibition of ancient and contemporary art objects ever sent abroad by Soviet authorities arrived in Washington on Friday (31 December) to begin a tour as part of the Soviet-American exchange programme.

In return, the United States will open in the soviet Union and exhibition devoted to American scientific research and development. Like the Soviet show, the American exhibition will spend the year visiting six cities.

Officials from the Soviet Union and from prominent United States circles are slightly worried over the possibility of damage to the art objects by the Jewish Defence League -- the exchange programme had already been postponed for a year following harassment from the League in New York and Washington.
