  • Description

    M. EMILE BADIANE, THE SENEGALESE MINISTER FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION, VISITED ON TUESDAY SEVERAL TECHNICAL SCHOOLS. MOST OF THE SCHOOLS HAD BEEN CLOSED DURING THE MAY/JUNE STUDENT UNREST IN SENEGAL AND HAVE RE-OPENED RECENTLY. ONE OF THE ESTABLISHMENTS THE MINISTER VISITED, WAS THE LOUIS DELAFOSSE TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL WHICH HAD BEEN CLOSED IN JUNE, TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE END-OF-YEAR EXAMINATIONS, AFTER SEVERE CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS.

DURING MAY AND JUNE, SENEGALESE AUTHORITIES BANNED MEETINGS AND GATHERINGS, AND CLOSED DAKAR'S UNIVERSITY, SCHOOLS, RESTAURANTS, CINEMAS, AFTER STUDENT AGITATION - THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF THE FRENCH STUDENT UNREST SPREADING TO A FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICAN COUNTRY. AT LEAST 20 STUDENTS WERE INJURED AT THE UNIVERSITY WHEN POLICE USED TEAR-GAS TO EVICT GROUPS OF STRIKING STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS ORIGINALLY WENT ON STRIKE AFTER THE GOVERNMENT REDUCED THEIR GRANTS. WORKERS JOINED THE STUDENTS WHEN TRADE UNION LEADERS CALLED FOR A GENERAL STRIKE.

DURING THE CLASHES, ONE STUDENT WAS KILLED AND MANY PEOPLE INJURED. SEVERAL STUDENTS AND TRADE UNION LEADERS WERE ARRESTED. THEY HAVE SINCE BEEN RELEASED. SCHOOLS AND THE UNIVERSITY RE-OPENED ON MONDAY WITH MAJOR CHANGES IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME.
