  • Description

Argentina's Carlos Monzon, widely acclaimed as one of the greatest-ever middleweight boxers, has resigned his world title.

SYNOPSIS: The thirty-five year old boxer, seen here in black shorts fighting Colombian challenger Rodrigo Valdez, successfully defended his title only last month. The fight, staged in Monte Carlo, Monaco, proved to be one of the hardest of his career. He beat Valdez on points after the bout had gone the full fifteen rounds.

Monzon formally resigned his title at a gala ceremony in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires on Monday (29 August). Among others, the ceremony was attended by Argentine actress Susana Gimenez, and top personalities from the boxing world.

Monzon signed telegrams giving his decision to the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association, both of whose world middleweight titles he held, as Rodrigo Valdez looked on.

Monzon now plans to dedicate himself to a film career. He has already made several films in Argentina and Europe. He first won the middleweight title in 1970, with 12th round knockout against reigning champion Nino Benvenutti of Italy. Since then he has successfully defended it fourteen times. His professional career began in 1963 and he won 87 of his 99 fights, with eight draws, three defeats and one no decision. He remained undefeated for over 12 years.
