Background: In the tiny English village of Tinsley Green, south of London the traditional deadly serious English Easter sporting event -- "the World Marbles Championship went ahead on Friday (12 April) in spits of wet weather.
They have played marbles -- knocking glass or clay balls out of a ring by fliching other balls at them -- in this village since the 16th century. And much earlier than that marbles was a favourite sport of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
In the opening rounds the Toucan Terribles, the local team who have won the championship for the last 17 years, crushed a challenge by a group of London disc jockeys by 252 points to three.
But the finals had to be postponed because of the rain.
The organisers announced this year they intended to keep the sports image pure by banning improperly dressed players.
Women, it was said could play, providing they wear a coat or some other garment when they bend down to flick the marbles.
But at least one girl turned up in very short shorts to catch the eye of the photographers.
There was no foreign competition at Friday's contest which raises money for charity.
Mr. Len Smith who leads the Toucan Terribles hopes to get sponsorship to allow him to compete in the United States Marbles championship to be held in Long Beach, California this summer.
The Tinsley Green World Championships will be completed within the next six weeks.
