Delegates of the Big Four Powersmet at the U.S. Ambassadorial residence in the Waldorf Astoriaa Hotel, New York, on Wednesday (August 5). The Four United Nations Ambassadors endorsed the American peace proposals for the Middle East and requested the reactivation of Dr. Gunnar Jarring's peace mission.
Attending the meeting with the U.S. Ambassador Charles Yost were the acting U.K. Ambassador Frederick Warner, the French Ambassador Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet and Soviet Ambassador Aleksei Zakharov.
After the meeting, which lasted more than three hours, Mr. Yost went to see the United Nations Secretary-General U Thant to formally request the reactivation of the Middle East Peace Mission of Dr. Gunnar Jarring.
Mr. Yost told reporters he was hopeful that the 90-day ceasefire, called for in the proposals, could be implemented within a matter of days.
Dr. Jarring, on leave from his post as Swedish Ambassador to Moscow, urgently returned to New York on Sunday (August 2). Since then he has been holding intensive consultations with representatives of the U.A.R., Jordan, Israel and Lebanon -- the States most directly involved in the Middle East crisis. Dr. Jarring has also conferred with United States Secretary of State, Mr. William Rogers, author of the American peace plan.
The five-nation conference of front-line Arab states in Tripoli, ended today (Thursday August 6) with the U.A.R. and Jordan welcoming reactivation of Dr. Jarring's mission.
