    President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, Hafez Al-Assad of Syria and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya ended their series of discussions in Cairo on Wednesday (7 February) with a session dealing exclusively with "The Battle Against Israel".

    The Presidents had been working on a political and military strategy for the Middle East situation. They met as the Presidential Council of the Federation of Arab Republics, which links their three nations.

    The leaders discussed a comprehensive study of the latest military situation in the Middle East in the light of secret decisions adopted recently at a meeting of the 18 nation Arab Defence Council. It was agreed that Syria was to get a further GBP20 million (US $48 million) aid because it had borne the brunt of recent Israeli air attacks.

    It is understood that the Presidents may also have discussed the implications of King Hussein's visit to Washington.

    SYNOPSIS: The leaders of Egypt, Libya and Syria ended their top-level discussions on the Middle East situation on Wednesday. According to an official statement, the three Presidents dealt exclusively with the battle against Israel in their final day of talks. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, host at the talks, was first to arrive at the conference centre.

    The arrival of President Assad, followed by Colonel Gaddafi made up the Presidential Council of the Federation of Arab Republics. The three have been working on a political and military strategy for the Middle East situation. During the series of talks, secret decisions adopted at a recent meeting of the 18-nation Arab Defence Council were considered. The Council had called for the re-opening of the eastern front in Jordan.

    The Council meeting ended in Cairo with the pledge of an extra 20 million pounds sterling aid for Syria because if had borne the brunt of israeli air attacks. The Council also decided to step up Pan-Arab co-ordination against Israel. President Assad was also reported to have given the Egyptian and Syrian leaders a full report on the air strikes against Syria.

    King Hussein of Jordan's Washington visit was considered another likely topic.
