    THE SYRIAN LEADER HAD ARRIVED WITH A NINE-MAN DELEGATION EARLIER IN THE DAY. HE WAS MET AT CAIRO AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT NASSER AND EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS MAHMOUD RIAD.

    NO PRIOR ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE VISIT WAS GIVEN, AND IT IS NOW KNOWN HOW LONG DR. AL ATASSI WILL BE IN CAIRO.

    YESTERDAY'S TALKS TOOK PLACE IN THE KUBBEH REPUBLICAN PALACE WHERE THE SYRIAN GUESTS ARE STAYING.

    THE TWO LEADERS WERE EXPECTED TO DISCUSS ASPECTS OF THE POLITICAL AND MILITARY SITUATION OF THE MIDDLE EAST, PARTICULARLY THE EASTERN FRONT AGAINST ISRAEL WHICH COMPRISES SYRIA, JORDAN, AND IRAG.

    DR. AL ATASSI'S ARRIVAL COINCIDED WITH A REPORT IN THE INFLUENTIAL EGYPTIAN NEWSPAPER AL AHRAM THAT EGYPT IS TO BEGIN WIDE-RANGING CONSULTATIONS WITH ARAB COUNTRIES ON THE MIDDLE EAST CRISIS. HIS VISIT WAS UNDERSTOOD TO BE THE START OF BI-LATERAL AND MULTI-LATERAL DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN ARAB COUNTRIES.

    KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN IS ALSO PLANNING TO VISIT THE U.A.R. DURING HIS TOUR OF ARAB COUNTRIES THIS MONTH.
