  • Description

EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTERNOON SEALED BOTH LANES OF THE HELMSTEDT-BERLIN AUTOBAHN AT HELMSTEDT FOR THE SEVENTH TIME SINCE THE WEEKEND. THE AUTOBAHN HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR THREE HOURS IN THE MORNING, BRINGING TRAFFIC TO A HALT AT BOTH ENDS OF THE 110-MILE (176KM) ACCESS ROUTE.

THE RED AND WHITE STEEL BARRIERS WERE MOVED ACROSS THE ROAD AND UNIFORMED GUARDS CARRYING SUB-MACHINEGUNS TOOK UP POSITIONS BEHIND THEM.

A LONG LINE OF CARS AND LORRIES QUEUED UP AT BOTH ENDS OF THE BUSY TWO-LANE LINK BETWEEN WEST BERLIN AND WEST GERMANY.

AMONG THE PEOPLE HELD UP AT THE WEST BERLIN END DURING THE MORNING CLOSURE WAS MR GORDON ETHERINGTON SMITH, THE BRITISH MINISTER AND DEPUTY COMMANDANT IN BERLIN.

THE AUTOBAHN HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY CLOSED IN THE PAST FEW DAYS -- FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1965 -- BECAUSE OF COMBINED SOVIET UNION AND EAST GERMAN MANOEUVRES IN THE AREA THROUGH WHICH IT RUNS.

WESTERN ALLIED MISSIONS ATTACHED TO SOVIET HEADQUARTERS IN POTSDAM, EAST GERMANY, HAVE LODGED VERBAL PROTESTS WITH SOVIET AUTHORITIES OVER THE BLOCKADE.
