  • Description

WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (22 APRIL) TO ELECT THE REPUBLIC'S FOURTH PARLIAMENT. AMONG THE EARLY VOTERS WERE THE MAIN PARTY LEADERS THEMSELVES.

PRIME MINISTER VORSTER'S RULING NATIONALIST PARTY WAS RETURNED TO POWER BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1948 LOST SEVERAL SEATS.

ALTHOUGH ALL RETURNS WERE NOT IN TODAY (23 APRIL) THE RIGHT WING CHALLENGE TO DR. VORSTER'S PARTY FROM THE HERSTIGTE NATIONALE PARTY (HNP) APPEARED TO HAVE FAILED. EARLY RESULTS SHOWED THAT MANY OF THE HNP CANDIDATES NOT ONLY LOST THE ELECTION BUT HAD TO FORFEIT THEIR DEPOSITS.

BUT THE RULING NATIONALIST PARTY LOST AT LEAST EIGHT SEATS TO SIR DE VILLIERS GRAAF'S UNITED PARTY, THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY IN THE COUNTRY. SIR DE VILLIERS GRAAF HIMSELF RETAINED HIS SEAT WITH A MAJORITY OF MORE THAN 6,000.

MRS. HELEN SUZMAN HELD ON TO HER ANTI-APARTHEID PROGRESSIVE PARTY'S ONLY SEAT WITH AN INCREASED MAJORITY.

ONLY THE 2.2 MILLION WHITES OUT OF A TOTAL POPULATION OF 18 MILLION WERE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE.
