Passengers from an Indian Airlines plane hijacked to Lahore in Pakistan on Friday (10 September) were flown back to New Delhi on Saturday.

SYNOPSIS: An Indian Airlines plane was sent from New Delhi to pick up the 77 passengers and six crew in Lahore, where they had been released early on Saturday. Their Boeing 737 was hijacked shortly after take-off from New Delhi and forced to fly to Lahore. Passengers said a man suddenly appeared at the back of the aircraft with a Sten gun.

Almost simultaneously, two others got up in the middle of the plane with hand grenades. The flight commander, Captain P. Reddy, was then brought out and locked in the rear toilet while the co-pilot took over the controls. The hostages were freed when Pakistani security men overpowered the hijackers after they had apparently been given drugged water. So far no detailed information about the nationality of the hijackers or their motives have been released. Many passengers believed the six men were all Kashmiris. They praised the handling of the incident by Pakistani authorities.

Hundreds of relatives and friends turned up at New Delhi airport to welcome back the freed hostages and crew on their return from Lahore. The plane commander, Captain Reddy, could not be interviewed as he was taken away by officials to prepare a report on the incident, after he was reunited with his family for a few minutes.
