  • Description

In a new wave of Viet Cong activity in South Vietnam, a village on the outskirts of Danang was devastated during a rocket attack early Wednesday (August 25). Two Soviet-designed 122 mm rockets crashed into wooden homes at Tan Lap Hamlet, about two miles (3 Kms) from the centre of South Vietnam's second largest city. Five civilians were killed and a similar number wounded. Hundreds were made homeless as fire swept through the village forcing its evacuation.

The sudden increased in Viet Cong activity has been interpreted as an effort to disrupt elections for the Lower House of Parliament this weekend. In a sequel to the attack on Danang, two United States columns searching for rocket launching sites came under fire and five Americans were killed.
