  • Description

Fighting in South Vietnam is again intensifying. The onset of the dry season has brought increasing activity by insurgent forces.

One area of heavy fighting is along Highway One and its intersection with Highway Three about 120 kilometres north-east of Saigon in the Gia Ray district.

The insurgent forces attacked three villages around the road in the middle of December. They occupied them and this meant about 6,000 villagers flod their homes and are living along the roadside.

The communist forces are making an all-out effort to seize the road. It is now the only safe link between Saigon and the vital Central provinces of South Vietnam.

If they can take the Long Khanh province - through which the highway passes - they can set up a zone separating the Central provinces form the Third Army Corps and would hold a strip of territory from Cambodia to the China Sea.
