  • Description

Ten people are believed to have lost their lives and 65 were injured when the little freighter Anna Maria Ievoli exploded in Naples harbour on November 21.

The tragedy occured while the 2,285 ton freighter was getting up steam to sail for Sicily. The boilers exploded with a blast that shook windows for many miles around and some in the city square --1,000 feet away were shattered.

Rivets and plates from the stricken ship were hurled among people in streets 100 yards away.

The blast ripped a hole 50 feet in diameter in the side of the ship which sank in 40 feet of water with only her grow above the high water mark.

The dead include members of the crew, dock workers and a customs officer.
