  • Description

The initial shipment of chemical munitions from Okinews arrived without incident at the new Johnston Island storage facility on January 22. The shipment, of 150 tons of mustard (MD) filled munitions, was made as part of the Army's plan to remove all chemical agents now stored on Okinews.

The movement of the remaining munitions will depend on the construction of additional storage facilities on Johnston Island which are scheduled to be completed in late 1971 or early 1972. In any event, all chemical munitions will be removed prior to reversion of Okinews to Japanese control.
