  • Description

THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE OVERTHROW OF PRESIDENT DIEM WAS CELEBRATED IN SAIGON YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WITH A GIANT PARADE OF TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT ENGAGED IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE VIETCONG. APART FROM THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE AND AMERICAN TROOPS, THERE WERE ALSO CONTINGENTS OF AUSTRALIANS, NEW ZEALANDERS AND SOUTH KOREANS PLUS A GROUP OF LONG-HAIRED MEN AND WOMEN MONTAGNARDS. THE MONTAGNARDS - MOUNTAIN TRIBESMEN OF CENTRAL SOUTH VIETNAM - ARE PRIMITIVES, BUT VERY GOUGH FIGHTERS, MANY OF WHOM ARE ARMED WITH CROSSBOWS.

AN ESTIMATED CROWD OF 30,000 WATCHED THE PARADE. AIR MARSHAL KY, THE PRIME MINISTER TOOK THE SALUTE. AS THE PARADE ROLLED BY, VIETNAMESE SKYRAIDERS AND B-57 FIGHTER BOMBERS JOINED UNITED STATES SUPERSABRES, VOODOOS, DELTA DAGGERS AND PHANTOMS IN A FLYPAST.

THE VIETNAMESE CONTINGENT WAS NATURALLY THE BIGGEST BUT ALL WERE ARMED WITH AMERICAN WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT. WAR HEROES WERE DECORATED IN THE TRADITIONAL MANNER - WITH GARLANDS. THE BLACK-CLAD MONTAGNARDS - ABOUT 400 OF THEM - DREW THE LOUDEST CHEERS, AS THEY MARCHED BAREFOOT IN LOINCLOTHS. SOME CARRIED MODERN UNITED STATES CARBINES, OTHERS CARRIED SPEARS AND SHIELD THEY'D BEEN FLOWN DOWN FROM THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, AND MANY HAD BROUGHT THEIR WOMEN WITH THEM. THEY MARCHED IN TRIBAL SARONGS AND CARRIED CROSSBOWS.

(THE DIEM REGIME WAS BROUGHT DOWN ON NOVEMBER 1ST, 1963. THE ANNIVERSARY - SOMETIMES CALLED "NATIONAL HEROES' DAY" AND SOMETIMES "REVOLUTION" OR "NATIONAL DAY" - IS SOUTH VIETNAM'S MOST IMPORTANT NATIONAL HOLIDAY.)
