    In Jordan a sudden outbreak of cholera has claimed nearly 200 victims. The disease has spread through a number of Middle East countries, including Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia. Health authorities in Amman, Jordan, in an attempt to quell the outbreak have ordered mass vaccinations and quarantine for travellers arriving from countries where instances of cholera have been reported.

    SYNOPSIS: The Jordanian Ministry for Health has acted swiftly to stop the spread of cholera.

    Despite government efforts, reported cases of the disease number almost two hundred. Authorities claim that most of the victims recovered after treatment but the death toll Jordan is still unknown. Free vaccination is one of the measures being adopted.

    Other precautionary measures ordered by the Jordanian Government include calling on children not to drink uncorked beverages and to order women to boil drinking water. Travellers have been urged not to visit countries where the epidemic has been reported.

    Cholera has been reported in a number of Middle East countries and already its effects have been devastating. In Syria, the death toll is more than 70 with more than 2,000 confirmed cases. In Lebanon, there have been at least 15 confirmed cases while in Egypt a Danish ship with suspected cholera cases aboard was ordered to leave the port of Alexandria. The cause of the epidemic is under investigation.
