  • Description

Italian Premier Amintore Fanfani and Dr Adenauer, the West German Chancellor - who had motored from Lake Como where he is spending a holiday - met at Varese, Italy, September 2 for talks on the European political and economical situation arising from the split between the Common Market and the European Free Trade Association nations led by Britain. Also present at the meeting was Italian Foreign Minister, Signor Segni.

Among the main topics discussed were President de Gaulle's plans for a French-led Grand Alliance between the six Common Market countries.

The next morning Signor Fanfani was to fly to Paris for a series of talks with President de Gaulle at Rambouillet. The importance of these conversations was reported to be greatly increased by the coordination of the attitudes of Italy and Germany thought to have merged from Signor Fanfani's talks with Dr Adenauer.

During the last fortnight, the Italian Ministers have conducted talks with Dr Luns, the Netherlands Foreign Minister, Mr Heath, Britain's Lord Privy Seal and M. Wigny, Belgian Foreign Minister. These discussions, said to have been preparatory to the coming talks with President de Gaulle, were completed with the meeting between Signor Fanfani and Dr Adenauer.
