COLOURED AND WHITE AMERICANS LIVING IN PARIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WENT TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY TO HAND IN A PETITION. THEY WERE THUS DEMONSTRATING SUPPORT FOR THE INTEGRATIONIST CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH ON WASHINGTON PLANNED FOR AUGUST 28TH.

BEARING THE SIGNATURES OF SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE, AMONG THEM NOVELIST JAMES BALDWIN AND ACTOR WILLIAM MARSHALL, THE PETITION WAS HANDED OVER TO THE AMBASSADOR'S CHARGE D'AFFAIRE WHO PROMISED THAT IT WOULD BE FORWARDED TO WASHINGTON. MR. BALDWIN TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE DEMONSTRATION WAS INTENDED TO EXPRESS THE FEELING OF AMERICANS IN PARIS: "JUST BECAUSE ONE IS NOT THERE IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT ONE DOES NOT CARE."
