    FRENCH AND FLEMISH EXTREMISTS SHOWED SUBSTANTIAL GAINS AND THE SOCIAL CHRISTIAN PARTY BIG LOSSES IN EARLY RETURNS IN THE BELGIAN GENERAL ELECTION TODAY (SUNDAY). THE SOCIAL CHRISTIAN PARTY PROVIDES THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. PAUL VAN DEN BOEYANTS IN THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT.

    REUTER REPORTS THAT AFTER THE EARLY ELECTION RETURNS BELGIUM APPEARED NO NEARER A SOLUTION TO ITS LANGUAGE FEUD BETWEEN FLEMISH AND FRENCH SPEAKING NATIONALISTS AND THAT THE FORMATION OF A NEW GOVERNMENT MIGHT NOT BE AN EASY MATTER.

    THE LIBERALS, JUNIOR PARTNERS IN THE OUTGOING COALITION, AND THE SOCIALISTS, SHOWED LOSSES. VIRTUALLY THE ONLY ISSUE IN THE ELECTION WAS FUTURE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE DUTCH SPEAKING FLEMISH PEOPLE OF THE NORTH AND THE FRENCH SPEAKING WALLOONS OF THE SOUTH.

    MR. VAN DEN BOEYANTS SAID THE SOCIAL CHRISTIAN WOULD REMAIN THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTLY IN THE COUNTRY DESPITE THEIR HEAVY LOSSES. REUTER SAYS THIS REMARK IS TAKEN TO MEAN THAT MR. VAN DEN BOEYANTS WILL ATTEMPT TO FORM A COALITION GOVERNMENT IF ASKED TO BY KING BAUDOUIN.

    THE SOCIAL CHRISTIANS, ON A COMPUTER ANALYSIS OF EARLY VOTING, ARE EXPECTED TO GAIN SIXTY NINE SEATS IN THE 212 SEAT GOVERNMENT. THE SOCIALISTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE 62 SEATS AND THE LIBERALS 47.
