    A giant crane, claimed to be the biggest in the Mediterranean, collapsed onto a shed on Thursday night at the Eleusis shipyards, 25 miles (40 km) from Athens, killing two West German technicians and seven Greek workers.

    The 400-ton-capacity crane was under construction by the West German Krupp Company, and should have been ready to be handed over in June.

    Shipyard authorities and the security police have begun an investigations into the disaster, but there was no immediate indication what caused the 130-foot (40-metre) high crane to collapse.

    SYNOPSIS: At the Eleusis shipyards near Athens, a huge crane collapsed on Thursday night, killing seven Greek workers and two West German technicians. Several more were injured. The 400-ton-capacity crane, claimed to be the biggest in the Mediterranean, crushed one of the shipyard buildings as it fell.

    The crane was being built under contract by Krupps, the huge West German industrial combine. It was nearing completion, and should have been handed over to the shipyard in June.

    There was no immediate indication of what caused the 130-foot high crane to collapse. Shipyard authorities and the Greek security police have begun an investigation into the disaster.
